If your dog swallows turkey bones...

This scenario is all too familiar to me. A couple of years ago, I mistakenly thought I had disposed of the turkey bones safely to prevent the dogs from getting into them, but I was completely wrong. One of my dogs got into the discarded turkey and swallowed some bones, which sent me into immediate panic. This is why I'm sharing some advice in case of such an incident.

Cooked turkey or any poultry bones become brittle and are prone to splintering. These splinters can cause injuries to the mouth, throat, and intestines, potentially leading to blockages and constipation.

What should you do if your dog swallows a turkey bone?

First, unlike what I did, do not panic. Stay calm and assess the situation. Determine if your dog has swallowed large bones or small fragments, as this will guide your vet's recommended course of action.

Second, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Despite common misconceptions, inducing vomiting is not advisable because the sharp edges of the bones can cause further damage as they are regurgitated or may become stuck in the digestive tract.

Third, promptly contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic for professional guidance tailored to your dog's size, breed, and other factors.

Next, watch your dog for signs of distress, including:

- Gagging

- Drooling

- Retching

- Loss of appetite

- Visible discomfort

- Lethargy

Restrict your dog's physical activity until you have consulted with your vet. Activity could cause the bones to shift within the digestive system, leading to blockages or other issues.

Following your vet's advice, offer a small meal of soft, easily digestible food to help cushion the bones and aid their passage through the digestive system. My vet suggested feeding my dog slices of bread throughout the day.

Lastly, monitor your dog's stool. It may take up to 48 hours for the bones to be digested and excreted. Pay close attention to any signs of constipation.

Always remember that prevention is better than treatment. Keep those bones out of reach and have a peaceful Thanksgiving.

Now, go give a belly rub!
